| Description: | this seems like the hybrid between eggerti and strumosus that occurs in the cumberland plataau, need to review and compare specimens. From JC Atlas: See also Jones' (1994) report to USFWS for BARR, etc. All collections need to be checked, especially for extra localities to support np records, and to clarify taxonomy. LINC (np) is probably strumosus; JACK (np) is definitely strumosus. The distinction of this taxon from H. strumosus needs more study throughout the region; eggertii may also be recognized in Mississippi, Illinois, Arkansas, Oklahoma and probably elsewhere; similar plants occur in Georgia, South Carolina & North Carolina but may just be unusually narrow-leaved strumosus (with rusty hairs?); see MB, NC. A few records from the Cumberland Plateau in Kentucky and Tennessee have been referred to eggertii, but this remains somewhat uncertain; e.g. the Obed River material in Tennessee is in JC's opinion strumosus (with relatively small head--some suggest introgression with microcephalus)... However, there is an eggertii-like collection at TN and MB: McCreary County; F.T. McFarland & M.E. James #46, 19 Aug 1941; dry soil at edge of woods, near Indian Creek, Cumberland Falls [area]. |
